Shoulder Replacement Surgery
Shoulder surgery encompasses a range of procedures aimed at treating various
conditions affecting the shoulder joint, including injuries, degenerative
conditions, and structural abnormalities. Here's an overview of common types of
shoulder surgeries:
Rotator Cuff Repair: The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that
stabilize the shoulder joint and facilitate movement. Tears in the rotator cuff
can occur due to trauma, overuse, or degenerative changes. Rotator cuff repair
surgery involves stitching together the torn tendon to restore strength and
function to the shoulder.
Shoulder Arthroscopy: Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in
which a small camera (arthroscope) and surgical instruments are inserted into
the shoulder joint through small incisions. Arthroscopy can be used to diagnose
and treat various shoulder conditions, including rotator cuff tears, labral
tears, impingement syndrome, and loose bodies in the joint.
Labral Repair or Reconstruction: The labrum is a ring of cartilage that
surrounds the shoulder socket (glenoid) and helps stabilize the joint. Labral
tears can occur due to trauma, repetitive overhead movements, or dislocations.
Labral repair or reconstruction surgery aims to repair or reconstruct the torn
labrum to improve stability and function in the shoulder joint.
Shoulder Replacement (Arthroplasty): Shoulder replacement surgery may be
recommended for patients with severe arthritis or irreparable damage to the
shoulder joint. During shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the
shoulder joint are removed and replaced with artificial components made of metal
and plastic. Types of shoulder replacement include total shoulder replacement,
partial shoulder replacement, and reverse shoulder replacement.
Shoulder Fracture Repair: Fractures of the shoulder can involve the collarbone
(clavicle), upper arm bone (humerus), or shoulder blade (scapula). Surgery may
be necessary to realign the fractured bones and stabilize the shoulder joint
with plates, screws, or other fixation devices.
